Maddison Pack is preparing the release of its new album “ABRIL 1959” which will take place in April 2024. You can purchase the new album from here.
Like the previous album, “Abril 1959” will be a Special Limited Edition of 110 units. It will contain a vinyl record with 7 original songs from the quartet that will be integrated into a book with texts, drawings and photographs. It will also include a CD with the 7 songs, an audio story and extra content.
MUSIC
Maddison Pack's new work, as if it were a soundtrack for a crime crime film, focuses more on the “noir” character of jazz. Added to this is the Mediterranean-French melodic “leitmotif” present throughout the album and which culminates in the song “Abril 1959”, it is a beautiful melody that begins and ends the album with a female voice.
The band recorded the 7 songs in three recording sessions, each one in a Civic Center in the city of Zaragoza: on February 23 at the CC Río Ebro, on April 19 at the CC Universidad and on June 19 at CC Joaquín Roncal. With this, the quartet shows its gratitude to the civic centers for their support and coverage of cultural activity in general and musical activity in particular.
The musical themes/composer of the album are:
Side A
1. «Alleyway» (Javier Calvo).
2. «Juliette» (Javier Calvo & Noel Redolar)
3. «Why me?» (Noel Redolar)
4. «Whisky, Freddy and me» (Javier Calvo)
Side B
1. «Old friends» (Noel Redolar)
2. «Evan’s Smile» (Javier Calvo)
3. «Abril 1959» (Javier Calvo & N. Redolar)
Along with the members of the quartet: Javier, Noel, Ernesto and Israel, they also collaborate on the music: Ángel Redolar (guitar) and Claudia Parra (vocals).
The mixing and mastering of the songs was done at the end of the summer by Sthéphane Ley at Studio Le 47, Toulouse (France).
ARTISTIC COLLABORATIONS
Like all Maddison Pack projects, “Abril 1959” is also a multidisciplinary project: music is harmonized with literature, painting and photography. Thus, the new album has the collaboration of the writer Ricardo Bosque, the illustrator Juanfer Briones and the photographers Mas Mastral, Javier Cruces and Julio López.
The writer Ricardo Bosque is the creator of the “noir” short story titled “The Glasses of Bill Evans”, with 5 chapters that inspire the musical themes of the project. The story will be included as text in the book and as an audio-story on the CD. The voices that give life to the text are those of the radio host and dubbing actor Ángel Redolar Cortés and the voice of the actress Montse Galve.
Ricardo Bosque is the author of works such as “The Last Plane to Lisbon” (2000, Editorial Combra), “Send Flowers to My Burial” (2007, Mira Editores), “New Culprits of the Spanish Police” (Salto de Página, 2009), “A Question of Gallons” (Literatures with Books, 2011). He also edits the blog “La Balacera” and the digital magazine “Calibre.38”, both dedicated to the black genre.
The cartoonist Juanfer Briones is the author of the comic illustrations for the story by Ricardo Bosque. Juanfer is the author of different illustrations in works such as “Amantes. The legend of Teruel” or “Alerta Bécquer”. He is also the author of numerous comics such as “La Clave de Sijena” or “Joaquín Costa", “Alfredo and the lion of Graus”.
The great photographer, friend and regular collaborator of the band Mas Mastral is the author of the album cover. The cover is a photograph inspired by one of Juanfer Briones' illustrations where the four members of Maddion Pack appear in an alley entering a Club through the back door. This illustration corresponds to the first chapter of the story titled “Alleyway” and the first song of the album of the same name.
It is a privilege that the teacher, genius and friend of the quartet Javier Cruces (three Goya awards in photography) collaborates again with his photographs giving life to unforgettable moments for the quartet. Also the photographer Julio López, from the Royal Photographic Society of Zaragoza, participates with his work in the new project.
